Faculty and staff are invited to participate in virtual commencement by submitting a five-second clip of themselves waving, applauding, dancing, giving thumbs up, holding “Congratulations, Skyline Grads!” signs, etc. by Wednesday, May 5.

The original sound in these clips will not be used, so be sure to show your excitement through your body language, attire, or signage. NOTE: it’s also recommended to avoid calling out specific class years in the clips so the clips can be used for both virtual ceremonies. Submitted clips will be edited into an opening montage that sets the mood for each ceremony. To get a feel for what we are creating, an example of a virtual commencement opening can be found here.

The SMCCCD Study Abroad office is happy to announce that the application for the Fall 2021 Global Virtual Team Internships Program is now open! Interested students should apply by Thursday, May 27, 2021 to be considered for the Fall 2021 Global Virtual Internship program and accompanying scholarship.

Through this program, students intern internationally from home with companies based in Australia, Canada, England, India, Japan, South Africa, or the U.S. (New York or San Francisco).

What’s the benefit of participating in a global team-based internship online? The world of work is changing. This program allows students to gain exposure to and proficiency within a remote workplace, experience working with a global team, expand their knowledge of an industry, further their understanding of global culture, and make international connections. Exact internships are determined through a placement process, but students may be matched with companies in various industries, including Business and Economics, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Marketing and PR, Policy and Government, Public Health and Education, Sustainability and Environment, Technology, and more.

Our Skyline College Academic Senate is still accepting nominations for the Meyer Excellence in Teaching Award. The deadline for submitting nominations is Monday, May 3rd. Details for submitting nominations are listed below.

The Meyer Award is an monetary award established by SMT faculty member, Professor Phil Meyer, to be given at the end of the academic year to a colleague who has been a full-time Skyline College faculty member for no more than five academic years. This award seeks to honor and celebrate  excellence in the classroom—the primary criterion for this award. Other criteria include departmental participation, student activities beyond the classroom, and overall collegiality. This prestigious award acknowledges the hard work of our full-time faculty colleagues in the beginning of their tenure at Skyline College. Since we did not award a Meyer Award recipient last year (…global pandemic), this year, eligible full-time faculty will include those from 2016.

Over $2,000,000 in Groceries Distributed at the Skyline Drive-Thru Free Community Market!

This past week marked the 32^nd Skyline College Free Drive-Thru Community Market! At this most recent weekly grocery distribution event we served 845 families with the support of 30 volunteers including the Golden State Warriors organization!

Every week each household or family receives almost 50 lbs of groceries, including milk, eggs, pasta, rice, fresh produce, canned goods and dry goods, as well as a protein item (ham, chicken, turkey, etc.).  Second Harvest Food Bank calculates that over 1,199,000 pounds of groceries have been distributed since our program started in September 2020 and that we have offset over $2,000,000 in grocery costs for the most at risk members of our local community! A special thanks goes to SMCCCD employees from SparkPoint, public safety, and facilities, as well as the wonderful volunteers who make this event possible every week.

This event is held at Skyline College every Wednesday, 11:00am-1:00pm and has been extended through August 2021. All staff, volunteers and participants adhere to all COVID-19 Health and Safety Protocols at all times.

• All participants must remain in their cars at all times and wear a mask
• Open to students and the community
• No I.D required to pick up food

Statewide FIl-GRAD Ceremony! Save the Date!

Filipinx organizations in community colleges across the state of California have come together to celebrate the Spring 2021 graduates! We invite all Filipinx community college students to join us for the first statewide ceremony filled with amazing speakers and performers, but ultimately to acknowledge your extraordinary accomplishment. This event will be held on June 10th, 2021 from 5:00pm-7:00pm.

Ever wonder what it would be like to be a council member in the world of Katniss Everdeen? Want to practice advocating for climate justice in a safe and welcoming environment? Do you simply want to brush up on your debate and networking skills?

The Skyline College’s Model United Nations Team is hosting an online Model United Nations Conference on Friday, May 7, from 3p.m. – 9p.m., no entrance fee required. Even if you’ve never heard of Model United Nations, we’ll have a tutorial session from 3p.m. – 4p.m., so please don’t miss out on this unique occasion!

The art of communication and persuasion thrives in Model United Nations, where participants mimic governmental/international organizations and engage in formal debate to stand up for their assigned role’s best interests. Participants at conferences will read a background guide and take part in committees that cover different topics; in our case, two! A General Assembly committee is typically larger than a Crisis committee, and a Crisis committee is typically a more creative and fast-paced environment than a General Assembly committee.

Our Crisis committee is the 75th Hunger Games Council, and our General Assembly committee is International Court of Justice: Climate Justice.

On April 28 the Human Library once again welcomed our community of staff, students and faculty to share personal stories as part of an international movement to “unjudge.” This was a virtual recurring event organized by Skyline College Library and Learning Center.

While all “human books” were fully reserved ahead of time, this session took place on a smaller scale than previously, allowing for an even more intimate space for readers and books to share their stories. As usual, all parties reported wishing they had more time together. 

The human books of the day included two “new” human books, Always a Student and An Intentional Tumbleweed and three returning books, Legend of Latin Rock’s Rise from Darkness into the Light, Lifetime of Impact, and Writing in Silence. (Full descriptions of each book appear here).

Students and books alike reported “powerful” and “relatable” experiences from their connections. One student reader described her experience after the event:

“…I will now think before I judge people; my first book really impressed how important that is. For my second book, I think number one is “don’t do drugs;” I also learned about just how resilient people are. My book had a really rough time in his life, and I realized a lot of people have had bad times, maybe not that bad, but bad…and still survive and push through. It’s sort of beautiful.”

A former student hoping to return to Skyline soon explained the impact of reading two human books, noting that while she’d stumbled on the Human Library event accidentally while searching for something else, “I don’t believe in coincidences….” She found that the experiences her books conveyed paralleled aspects of her own life, providing inspiration for her to move forward:

“I was moved by the genuine authenticity and candid honesty of both Leo and Martin. This…experience I’ve had for the first time today was memorable and worthwhile and should be done as often as possible so that others can gain the same value and enjoyment that I gained…”

Human books also reported on “excellent” connections in tackling difficult topics. From one book, “We were able to visit topics of racism toward people of color (LatinX), microaggressions faced by individuals of color, silencing of POC narratives, and discrimination of first generation students in colleges/private institutions.”
