Institutional Planning Committee Update

Skyline College’s Institutional Planning Committee (IPC) held its third meeting of the year on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Much of this meeting was dedicated to the initial discussion of possible revisions to the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). Many of the BSC measures were discussed in terms of how they are assessed, the goal value associated with the measure, and how we might improve the specific measure. As this was the first step in the process, more discussions will take place in the coming months culminating in a possible revised version of the BSC. In addition to this, the IPC engaged in a discussion on the Distance Education Strategic Plan and voted to recommend the plan to College Governance Council. Also, the IPC discussed a merger with the College Budget Committee to increase the degree to which our planning and budgeting are already integrated. As always, feedback on these or any topics are more than welcome so please feel free to speak with your IPC representative to make sure they have your input!

Life After Transfer: Honors Program Alums Share Their Knowledge

4014

Skyline College pride was busting out on Thursday November 7th when the Honors Program held an Alumni panel presentation specifically designed to inform and inspire current Skyline College students. Six Skyline College Honors Alums sat on the panel, generously sharing useful information and strategies for success based on their own experiences as transfer students.

The six panelists have all graduated from four year universities and are pursuing their dreams: Frances Bright graduated from UCB with a BA in Anthropology and MA in Folklore and Archeology; Derrick Hau from UCB in Molecular & Cell Biology; Raydan al Hubashi from UCSC in Politics; Jonathan Madison from Howard University in Political Science; Melba Madrigal from Cornell in Labor and Industrial Relations; and Leo Szeto from UCLA in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Frances is currently teaching a special course for transfer students at Berkeley. Derrick is working for a software company and enrolled in a MA program in biotechnology. Raydan is on his way to teach in China. Jonathan worked for three years in Congress and is currently enrolled in law school. Melba is working in finances for a software firm and developing a website for community college transfer students. Leo is working for Disney as an Imagineer and he will be moving to China to design rollercoasters for the upcoming Shanghai Disneyland.4009

The Skyline College students in the audience received the Alumni panelists’ remarks with great enthusiasm. The evening was full of interaction, connection and useful information. A mentor contact list was created on the spot, and one of the panelists, Derrick Hau, started a Facebook group for alums and current honors students.

The panel presentation was video taped by Ira Lau of Skyline College’s Media Center and will be available on the HTP web access site as well as through the HTP website, so students who could not attend on 11/7 can benefit from the presentation. Life After Transfer was designed by a focus group of current honors students and organized by Katharine Harer, former HTP Coordinator, and Priscilla Schwartz, Skyline Honors Alum Extraordinaire.

Transferring as a BUS major to SFSU with Dr. Albert Koo and Doris Fendt!

photo 1The Transfer Center partners with SFSU College of Business, Career Center and Alpha Beta Delta to get out important information to Business and Accounting Students!

On Tuesday, October 29 the Transfer Center, along with the Career Center hosted Dr. Albert Koo, SFSU’s College of Business Director of Student Services in Business, and Doris Fendt, Admissions Representative from San Francisco State University. In a joint effort to make Transfer part of the conversation and to raise awareness at Skyline College, the Transfer Center and Career Center wanted to provide students with the opportunity and access to connect with local Universities. Dr. Koo’s presentation focused on general requirements for admission for students interested in applying as Business majors, what classes students want to make sure they have taken and other ways to stay ahead as they prepare to transfer. Doris Fendt addressed questions regarding general admissions, scholarships, and deadlines students needed to aware of as they considered transferring to San Francisco State University.

Overall, with over 20 students attending the workshop Dr. Koo and Doris Fendt, were fielded with many great questions from students interested in attending SFSU. Presenters also found that students were asking excellent questions and showed considerable knowledge and interest in their goals and hopes to transfer. Skyline College students impressed them and they were excited to be part of helping to make Transfer happen for our students.crap

And on Tuesday, October 8th, the Transfer Center, along with Kappa Beta Delta hosted Dr. Albert Koo to address the recent change in the Accounting Concentration becoming impacted at SFSU. He provided critical information about how students can plan ahead to optimize their chances of being admitted and finishing the program within 2 years after transferring. He also explained the new application requirements for Fall 2014 applicants. Almost 50 students attended and spent over 20 minutes during the question and answer period asking critical questions about how to prepare themselves to transfer as a business major with an accounting concentration.

SFSU is Skyline College’s largest feeder campus and 20% of all transfer students last year were business majors and 10% overall had a concentration in Accounting. By providing students with access to key information, they increase their chances of a successful transfer. Additionally, Albert Koo is a main contact for students when they are attending SFSU, so establishing a relationship with him prior to attending supports their long-term success at achieving their B.S. in Business Administration.

Skyline College Students Chosen for Leadership Conference

skylineMESAstatereps

A select group of Skyline College students recently honed their leadership skills at a special invitation-only conference in San Diego for math-based majors. The event was sponsored by the California Utilities Diversity Council.

The 10th annual Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) Student Leadership Conference held last weekend offered extensive professional and leadership development through direct interaction with industry mentors and speakers. The hand-picked MESA students, all science, engineering, or math majors, represented over 30 universities and community colleges from across the state, including Skyline College.

Participating Skyline College students were:

Cristina Autry, Sophomore, Bioengineering

Mathew Ennis, Sophomore, Physics

Joana Franco, Sophomore, Engineering

Johana Quandt, Sophomore, Civil Engineering

Students participated in mock interviews, connected with industry representatives from 16 national and California companies and heard guest speakers. MESA alumnus Senator Alex Padilla encouraged students to work hard and strive for success, and was honored with the MESA Outstanding Alumni Award.

Skyline College students were sponsored by Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Their generous contribution allowed students from Northern California campuses to attend. Pacific Gas & Electric Company employees volunteered their time to work closely with the students during the conference.

“We know that California’s economy needs more STEM workers to stay competitive,” said MESA Executive Director Oscar F. Porter. “These students provide the solution to industry’s need for well-trained professionals.

“They were selected to attend the conference because these students have strong leadership skills. This event gives them a chance to interact extensively with STEM professionals currently working in industry,” said Porter.

Student attendees represented the following campuses: CSU Chico, CSU Fresno, CSU Long Beach, CSU Los Angeles, CSU Sacramento, San Diego State University, San Francisco State University, San Jose State University, Sonoma State University, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UC Santa Cruz, University of the Pacific, American River College (Sacramento), Bakersfield City College, City College of San Francisco, College of the Sequoias (Visalia), Cosumnes River College (Sacramento), East Los Angeles College, El Camino College (Torrance), Los Medanos College (Pittsburg), Pasadena City College, Rio Hondo College (Whittier), Sacramento City College, San Diego City College, Santa Ana Junior College, Santa Barbara City College, Skyline College (Redwood City), Southwestern College (Chula Vista), and Yuba College (Marysville).

MESA promotes STEM success for more than 28,000 educationally disadvantaged secondary, community college and four-year college students in California through project-based learning, academic counseling and exposure to STEM careers, so they can graduate from college with math-based degrees. Seventy percent of MESA high school graduates statewide went directly to college after graduation compared to 48 percent of all California graduates. Sixty percent of MESA students go on to math, science or engineering majors.
