Tenderloin Dirt Harvested, Transformed, and Served with Tenderloin Food

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 21, 2013) – On October 24th and November 7th, conceptual artist Ilana Crispi invites the public to sit on, drink from, and eat out of Tenderloin dirt transformed into ceramic vessels and furniture. “Most people demonstrate visible disgust at the idea of touching the ground here. I want to challenge that stigma and help people feel a direct connection to this soil,” shares Crispi, who lived and taught in the Tenderloin.

Food grown atop Glide Memorial Church will be served in Crispi’s dirt creations — attesting to the vibrant and verdant promise of the Tenderloin. “We are excited to be involved with Crispi’s urban transformation and to share our abundant autumn harvest of heirloom greens, edible flowers, and tomatoes as well as honey from our rooftop beehives,” says Lindsey Dyer of Glide Foundation’s Graze the Roof. Crispi chose to serve local food because “There’s so much hiding beneath the surface in this neighborhood, even nature in spite of the concrete.” she explains.IlanaCrispiDirt

Crispi single-handedly excavated 90 gallons of dirt for this show from sites like Tenderloin’s Boeddeker Park, where she taught art to neighborhood kids. At that time, Crispi’s students could not use the soil because the park was littered with needles and a prison-like fence was needed to address the number of bodies found in the mornings. “I want people to experience a beautiful version of this place. People once picnicked here among dwarf oaks and blackberry bushes. Now there’s no green space.” reminds Crispi. Declaring a vista point where visitors are directed to stop, sit, look, eat, and drink “is a celebration of our neighborhood, past and present. She’s excavating the history of the Tenderloin through its dirt,” appreciates Frank Merritt, Co-Founder of Ramon’s Tailor.

Decades earlier, when the Tenderloin catered to the white middle-class and bourgeois, “people came together to enjoy theater, dance, skating, and bowling in the past incarnations of Boeddeker Park. Now the site’s dirt is being transformed again. The Tenderloin — like the Fillmore, Western Addition, and Mission — struggles against losing its sense of place and Crispi’s project calls on us to deeply consider its rich history and future,” shares Betty Traynor of Friends of Boeddeker Park. Sarah Wilson of Uptown Tenderloin Museum adds “We welcome contemporary artists like Ilana Crispi who engage with the community to shed light on the Tenderloin’s past.” After all, Crispi observes: “In the Tenderloin, much of the history of this place, like the dirt, is not visible.”

Wishing Rob Johnstone a Fond Farewell!

Please join me in extending warm wishes to Dr. Rob Johnstone as he embarks on a new venture of starting the National Center for Inquiry & Improvement (NCII). Rob has been collaborating with the RP Group to do work with the Gates Foundation across the nation for the recent two years. During his leave, Dr. David Ulate has served as the Interim Dean of Planning Research and Institutional Effectiveness. Rob officially notified us of his intent to resign his position effective December 30, 2013. During his time here, Rob was instrumental in developing a strong foundation for institutional research and a culture of data informed decision making. Also, his work on Completion by Design has given Skyline College a solid framework from which to contextualize our work to improve student success. For this and all that he has done, we are very appreciative. “We certainly wish Rob well and extend our heartfelt gratitude to him for his great service to our college, students and community.”

The college will immediately begin the hiring process of seeking candidates to be considered for appointment to the position.

Transfer Awareness Month a Success!!!

Fall 2013_Transfer Conference Attendees_Transfer TeamRecently, the Transfer Center hosted Transfer Awareness Month, a time when a host of workshops and events are available to students interested in learning more about transferring and what it would take to get the process started.

We kicked off the month with a very well attended CSU Drop-In Application Assistance Workshop. More than 30 students visited the Transfer Center during the hours of 9:00 am and 1:00 pm for assistance with their online application and many students were able to successfully submit their applications to their preferred colleges and universities. And for those students who missed the workshop, the Transfer Center also hosted an informational CSU Application Workshop.Fall 2013_Transfer Conference Opening Photo_Joy_VP This workshop offered students information about the process and how to start the application, where to go for information, and what type of information they would need to complete the workshop. With at more than 18 students attending, this was also a very well attended workshop, which students found to be very informative and helpful to them starting the process to transfer.

Fall 2013_Transfer Conference Attendees_StudentsAlong with workshops, the Transfer Center worked hard to provide Skyline College students access to college representatives from UC Davis, SFSU, UC Santa Barbara and Columbia University. At least 40 or more students met with these representatives, which gave them an opportunity to meet one-on-one regarding questions about applying and information about various programs and majors. For students interested in attending San Francisco State University, college representative Paul Mendez and Doris Fendt were on hand! They met with over 20 students during their various college visits answering questions about transferring to SFSU and discussing with students the Transfer Articulation Bridge Program. The TAB program offers Skyline College students an opportunity to enroll in one course at SFSU while still earning units at Skyline College. The course prepares students by giving them an overview of the various resources available to students at SFSU and how to make sure they are transfer ready! Both Paul and Doris expressed how impressed they were with Skyline College’s students; they illustrated strong interest in transferring and were asking many critical questions.

Finally, in addition to college representative one-on-one conferencing, the Transfer Center and Skyline College hosted our annual Transfer Day on Monday, October 21. Over 40 college and university representatives were in attendance for this event! Representatives met with Skyline College students and assisted them by providing access to important information regarding transfer to the colleges or universities of their choice. Many representatives, similar to Doris and Paul, also expressed how impressed they were by our students’ excitement and critical thinking skills. With over 200 students in attendance for the event, many asked very good questions that showed their earnest interest in moving forward with their academic goals.DSCN4131

And finally, the Transfer Center ended Transfer Awareness Month by meeting with the Transfer Initiative Advisory Committee. This committee is setting the groundwork to make the Transfer Center a constant part of Skyline College Community. During the meeting the committee revisited the group’s discussion from the previous meeting and narrowed its focus by spending more time defining Transfer Culture and by conducting a group activity designed to prioritize tasks and goals for the following meeting.

Overall, Transfer Awareness Month was very successful. Many dialogues regarding transfer were robust and all of our activities and events were overwhelmingly attended. We look forward to the coming months as planning months for the rest of the semester as we continue to host college representatives and workshops or events geared toward making transfer happen for our awesome Skyline College student community.

The Sustainability Ambassador Network (SAN) met on Wednesday, November 20 to explore solutions to campus sustainability issues around transportation, waste diversion, water efficiency, and green learning environments. Twenty Skyline College students, administrators, faculty and staff gathered to identify goals and develop action plans for the 2013-2014 academic year. Some of SAN’s upcoming initiatives include improving access and incentives for alternative modes of transportation, reducing material waste, energy use, and water use in campus buildings, and expanding a successful composting pilot program that was implemented at Skyline College last year.

SAN encourages participation from all Skyline College employees and students. If you are interested in campus sustainability initiatives and want to get involved, please contact Richard Hsu, hsur@smccd.edu.
