It Was Worth It!

Twenty-six years ago, Tammy Calderon walked onto the Skyline College Campus as a freshman in the Cosmetology Department.  She went on to complete a Cosmetology certificate in the fall of 1988 and in the spring of 1992, earned an Associate in Science degree.

Coming full circle from student to instructor, on August 19, 2013 Tammy had the opportunity to welcome 29 freshmen students into the Skyline College Cosmetology Program.  The students who are anxious to start their journey in becoming professional hairstylists will learn the necessary skills to serve this campus community of students, staff, faculty, and public through a variety of cosmetology services including haircuts, manicures, hair color, perms and even facials.

Tammy believes that upon completion of their Cosmetology certificate, some of these students will continue their education and complete their Associate degrees.  When asked, Tammy says, “I did and I can honestly say, IT WAS WORTH IT!”

Hermanos y Hermanas End of the Year Celebration 2013

Hermanos/as End of the Year Celebration

Students at Hermanos/as EOY 2013 Celebration

On Thursday, May 16, 2013 over 125 Hermanos and Hermanas students, family members, mentors, community members, and friends attended the Hermanos/as End of the Year Celebration to celebrate the wonderful achievements of the Hermanos/as students and the commencement of their higher education at Skyline College.  This extraordinary event included a keynote speech by Ivan Martinez, a former Hermano, a speech by Santos Alvarez, a current Hermano student, and awards for all of the Hermanos and Hermanas students. The awards recognized High School Hermanos and Hermanas as well as current Skyline College Hermanos and Hermanas. Additional recognitions included German Valencia receiving the Community Leadership Award and the Shining Star Awards given to Dania Delgadillo, Alex Delgadillo, Natalia Zaragoza, and Daniel Jimenez. The event was coordinated by Aricka Bueno, the Hermanos/as Counselor and Instructor. The Hermanos/as Programs provides academic instruction, mentoring, and family support for Latino/students with the goal of preparing students to transition out of high school and into college with confidence along with gaining the academic and personal skills needed to succeed.  The event was a true collaboration between the students and their families, the community, and Skyline College. The strong presence of the students’ family members was indicative of the interest that Latino/a parents have in their children’s education and the importance of family to the success of Latino/a students. A special thanks goes out to all of the Hermanas/os students for their hard work throughout the year! Many of the high school students will be joining us here in the Fall as Skyline College students! Congratulations to all of the graduating Hermanos and Hermanas!

CLASSIFIED SENATE RETREAT

Classified Senate Retreat

Classified Senate Retreat

“Fun, Fellowship and Fitness” was the theme for this year’s Classified Senate Retreat.  The Classified Senate hosted 20 staff members at this year’s retreat held on July 25, 2013 at the College Vista clubhouse.  The goal of the retreat was to provide a relaxed environment for classified staff to discuss how they can strengthen their organization and encourage more participation in Senate meetings, campus committees, and classified-sponsored events.

The group enjoyed a spirited brainstorming session over breakfast before moving on to the Filoli Estate in Woodside for a walk in the spectacularly blooming gardens.  Staffs were able to congregate in small groups, allowing time to get to know each other better and meet new employees that have recently joined the Skyline College family.

After lunch, the group worked to create a solid draft for their new constitution and bylaws.  Participants appreciated the opportunity to share their thoughts and concerns about many issues that affect classified staff.  The day ended with an energetic Zumba Gold session led by instructor Katie Nielsen Mateo, and everyone was sent home relaxed, if a bit exhausted!

Faculty and Staff “Kick-Off” Event

Skyline College was recently awarded a grant through the State’s Chancellors Office “Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy” Initiative to build on and develop innovative and high quality Retail, Hospitality and Tourism Programs in Bay Region Community Colleges.

In our efforts to bring together interested individuals, we will be hosting the Bay Region: Faculty/Staff “Kick-Off” Event for the Retail, Hospitality and Tourism “Learn and Earn” Grant, the event will be held at Skyline College on September 26th from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Building 6:  Rooms 6202, 6204 and 6206.

This event is for faculty and staff who are interested in taking part in our many exciting activities around the development of Retail, Hospitality, and Tourism programs and training.  It will also be an opportunity for all to learn more about the grant, how they can get involved, and network with others who are doing great work in this sector.  We will also allow faculty to share what they are currently offering and what they are working on in the areas of Retail, Hospitality and Tourism program development.

If you would like to attend please RSVP to vizenora@smccd.edu, if you have any questions please free to call Andrea Vizenor at 650-738-7124 or email vizenora@smccd.edu.
