Canada College’s Women in STEM Club hosted an insightful Allied Health Careers Panel last week, welcoming three allied health professionals from Skyline College to share their experiences and expertise. The club meeting drew an enthusiastic crowd of students interested in the diverse pathways available within our community college district. Club members learned about the day-to-day realities of various roles, the essential skills for success in each training program, and the critical impact allied health professionals have on patient care and community well-being.

Visiting professionals offered practical advice on choosing the right academic programs for your skills, identifying internships and volunteer opportunities, and interprofessional collaboration. They stressed the value of a strong foundational education, critical thinking skills, and the personal qualities—like empathy and resilience—that are paramount in healthcare professions. Focusing on how COVID greatly impacted the mental health of healthcare workers, panelists expressed the importance of practicing self-care in moments of high stress and instability.

Students left feeling inspired and with a clearer understanding of the exciting future that awaits them in allied health. It was a fantastic chance for students to gain direct perspectives from those who have worked in the field.
