One of the foundational objectives of TRIO is to prepare students to earn a certificate, graduate, and/or transfer to a 4-year University or College. A key facet in motivating students to “keep their eyes on the transfer prize” is exposure, engagement, and aspiration. Tailored college visits help to cultivate a culture of transfer while enabling students to assess the fit and potential belonging at destination institutions.

On Friday, September 26, Skyline College TRiO students, along with staff members, traveled to San José State University (SJSU) for a day filled with exploration, discovery, and fun. The visit included a guided campus tour and a spirited scavenger hunt that gave students a look into life at one of the Bay Area’s largest public universities.

For many, this was their first time setting foot on the SJSU campus. Students were struck by the welcoming environment and the wide range of programs and resources available. One student reflected, “I really like their study abroad program, the tour guide mentioned—this is my #1. I’m going to do much more research and make sure my classes are all done so I’m ready to transfer.” Another student shared, “Before I went, I hadn’t fully considered going here, but after seeing the campus and hearing about all the wonderful things this university has to offer, it’s making me reconsider my first opinion.” Others echoed this excitement, with one noting, “It definitely solidified my choice for this being my #1 transfer school.”

The trip also received overwhelmingly positive feedback, with 60% of students rating the experience as “outstanding,” and another 35% describing it as “very satisfactory” or “satisfactory.”

The visit left many students optimistic about their next steps. As one participant explained, “Visiting SJSU made me realize transferring is not impossible. I feel inspired, and I know I just need to keep up with my classes and prepare.”
From inspiration to action, the SJSU field trip provided TRiO students with a clearer picture of what’s possible after Skyline College—and the motivation to continue moving toward their transfer goals. Experiences like these highlight TRiO’s commitment to opening doors and helping students turn potential into reality.
