On April 29, 2026, the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Program, in collaboration with the Equity and Student Support (ESS) Division, proudly hosted its inaugural First Generation Carnival; an event that surpassed expectations while bringing to life a vision long championed by our retired director, Mr. Michael Stokes. With more than 260 students registered and dozens of faculty and staff participating in the games, the turnout powerfully reflected the strength, pride, and engagement of our first-generation community.

From the moment students arrived at the Fireside Dining Hall, the focus was on creating a welcoming and well-organized experience. During check-in, participants completed registration, received participation stamps, and were given goodie bags along with carnival booklets.

The carnival featured a dynamic mix of activities that kept energy high and students engaged. Outdoor games brought excitement and friendly competition, while indoor activities fostered fun and connection. At each station, students earned tickets for the opportunity drawings, adding an extra layer of anticipation.

A standout highlight was the powerful presentation by guest speaker Kenya Sullivan. His personal and inspiring message resonated deeply with attendees, encouraging reflection, pride, and active engagement. His session became a meaningful centerpiece of the celebration.

Beyond games, the event offered spaces for creativity, resources, and community building. A resource table provided valuable information to support student success, while a photo booth captured moments of joy and belonging that students could carry with them.

Food also played an important role in bringing the community together. With a variety of sweet treats, pizza, and drinks available, students were able to relax, connect, and share the experience, reinforcing the sense of community that defined the event.

Prize drawings maintained excitement, with students eagerly submitting tickets for chances to win from an array of gifts. The event concluded with a grand prize drawing to end the celebration on a high note.

More than just a day of activities, the First Generation Carnival was a meaningful celebration of identity and perseverance. Students, Alumni, and Skyline College employees were invited to share their stories through photos, contributing to a slideshow that highlighted the resilience, diversity, and achievements of the first-generation community.

The success of the event was made possible in part by the support of campus partners, STEPs (Skyline TRIO, EOPS, Promise Scholars), and special programs such as Care/CalWorks, Guardian Scholars, Learning Center, CIPHER, Peer Mentoring, Educational Access Center, along with host TRIO and co-host Equity Student Support department.

Special thanks were extended to the following folks: Dr. Nate Nevado for his contributions of many prize items and engagement with his class, Roger Perez-Vaughan for the coordination of our guest speaker Kenya Sullivan, Ron Amos for all the media support, Dean Will Minnich for the fun and competitive energy, and our TRIO squad (Jacquie E., Roxanne C., Ella C., Brianna F., Manny V., and Courtney M.)

The strength in numbers fosters a sense of connection and support.

Ultimately, the First Generation Carnival was more than an event; it was the realization of a vision rooted in uplifting first-generation voices. Inspired by the legacy of Mr. Michael Stokes, the celebration embodied community, belonging, and achievement, reaffirming a shared commitment to supporting first-generation scholars and creating a lasting impact for years to come.
