Skyline College is proud to announce “The State of Water,” an interactive exhibit now on display in the Skyline College Library as part of the Critical Global Citizenship Education (CGCE) President’s Innovation Fund project. The exhibit invites students, faculty, staff, and community members to explore the vital importance of water through engaging displays, hands-on activities, and opportunities for creative expression.

Complementing the library exhibit, Phi Theta Kappa’s Beta Theta Omicron chapter has created a traveling water display featuring water facts from across the globe. Under the guidance of Chapter President Genevieve Caamal and officer Kyaw Lwin, PTK members actively contributed research to bring this global water story to life. Next week, the student-created display will be located in Building 6 Fireside Dining before continuing its journey across campus throughout the semester.

Visitors to both the exhibit and the traveling display can engage with the content in multiple ways, including submitting original poetry inspired by water, contributing personal stories and reflections to a collaborative Padlet, and testing their knowledge through an interactive quiz.

CGCE has planned a series of events to accompany the exhibit throughout the semester. The celebration begins with an Opening Reception on Monday, February 2, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., with a second reception on Tuesday, February 3, from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. Both events offer an opportunity to experience the exhibit firsthand while enjoying refreshments and conversation.

On Thursday, March 5, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., the Community Education Panel will bring together speakers from the Bay Area Water Supply and Conservation Agency (BAWSCA), Filoli, and the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone for a dynamic discussion exploring local and global challenges in water conservation and stewardship.

The programming continues on Wednesday, March 11, from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. with a Community Art and Poetry Workshop led by former San Mateo Poet Laureate Aileen Cassinetto. This creative session will guide participants in crafting poetry and collaborative art inspired by water, drawing on the High Seas Treaty, water treaties, and other texts as sources of inspiration.

Throughout the exhibit’s run, students and community members are invited to contribute their own creative work. Original poetry, artwork, and personal stories about water can be submitted via online forms, and these contributions will be assembled into a community installation on display in the Skyline College Library for the remainder of the semester. This collaborative installation represents the collective voice of our campus community reflecting on water’s role in our lives.

“The State of Water” exemplifies Skyline College’s commitment to engaging students and the broader community in meaningful dialogue about the issues that shape our world. We invite everyone to visit the exhibit, attend the upcoming events, and add their voice to this important conversation.
