As we concluded another demanding semester and prepared for Commencement Day, Skyline College took a moment to acknowledge the stress that often accompanies such busy times. From staff pushing to meet service demands, faculty preparing students for finals, and students striving for top grades, this type of pressure can take a toll on mental health and physical well-being. Acknowledging the need for our community to relieve these symptoms, Active Minds and the Learning Commons joined forces to present “De-Stress Week,” inviting the Skyline College community to pause, unwind, and rejuvenate!
On April 29, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Active Minds hosted “Therapeutic Splatter” inside the Quad, allowing students to release stress creatively through art. Participants expressed their favorite relaxation methods with chalk drawings, including “taking walks,” “drawing,” “hanging out with friends,” and even “hugging my dog.”
The event continued with activities like “Friendship Bracelets and Video Games,” the “Garden of Mental Health Awareness,” and “Candy Leis for Grads” in Fireside Dining, providing outlets for 120 students, faculty, and staff.
The same day, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., the Learning Commons kicked off De-Stress Week with three major events. Monday saw Indigo, the therapy peacock from the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) Volunteer Pet Assisted Therapy (PAT) Program, offering relaxation to over 70 community members, children, students, and staff. Wednesday delighted students with “Cookies & Cupcake Decorating,” and Thursday featured therapy dogs Star and Sadie from the same PHS volunteer program, providing comfort and relaxation to all who visited the library.
The overwhelming gratitude expressed by students underscored the value of these activities in fostering a sense of community and providing much-needed respite from academic pressures. Active Minds and the Learning Commons are committed to continuing these initiatives into Fall 2024.
We extend heartfelt thanks to Facilities for their cleanup efforts, as well as to all members of Active Minds, the staff and student assistants of the Learning Commons, and the Peninsula Humane Society Volunteer PAT Program for their contributions to the Skyline College community’s well-being. Special appreciation goes to MCPR for their stellar marketing coordination. Stay tuned for more exciting events in Fall 2024!
And to the graduating class of 2024: Congratulations! You’ve earned every moment of celebration.
