On Friday, September 8, 2023, and Friday, October 13, 2023, the Learning Center and STEM Center collaborated to host professional development workshops for their student employees as part of an ongoing series meant to raise awareness of resources on campus and provide important skills necessary to student support.

On September 8, student employees gathered at the top of Building Six to learn about campus resources and how they can leverage them to help their students. This included discussing how to introduce students to these resources and perform a warm hand-off at the appropriate place. Student employees completed a scavenger hunt across campus to become more familiar with the various resources that students interact with on a day-to-day basis.

On Friday, October 13, student employees again met in Building Six to learn how to de-escalate worried students who may be struggling and at what point they should be introduced to one of the services on campus.

Guided by Perry Chen, Skyline College’s own Psychological Services Counselor, student employees learned how to de-escalate tense situations alongside the specific language they should use to build empathy and understanding with struggling students.
