On Thursday, September 11, 2025, Skyline College’s Undocumented Community Center (UCC) hosted its Fall Open House and Community Welcome. The event brought together 70 students, faculty, and staff from across campus to celebrate the newest cohort of Unlocking Futures Fellows and learn more about the Center’s services. Guests were welcomed by Fernanda Castorena, Program Services Coordinator for the UCC, along with student assistants. Highlights included introductions from several of the new Fellows, a presentation on UCC programs and resources for undocumented and mixed-status students, and a community-building activity where participants decorated wooden hummingbirds as they shared a community lunch together.

Welcome the 25-26 Unlocking Futures Fellowship Cohort!
This fall, the Unlocking Futures Fellowship (UFF) received over 40 inspiring applications from students dedicated to making an impact. Applicants participated in in-person interviews that centered on their lived experiences, leadership, and contributions to their communities.

After a thoughtful and thorough selection process, we’re proud to introduce our 2025–2026 cohort: six new fellows and one returning fellow. This year’s fellows bring a wide range of passions and expertise from STEM, Child Development, the Promise Program, Transfer Center, Dual Enrollment, Undocumented Student Advocacy, and the Associated Student Government. Their diverse perspectives and commitment to service will continue to strengthen our collective work.

We are thrilled to welcome our new fellows and can’t wait to support and celebrate their journey. They’ve already hit the ground running, joining their UCC leads for a kickoff orientation and training on Friday, September 12, which took place at Canada College. Here’s to another incredible year of unlocking futures, together.

Looking Ahead
The UCC remains dedicated to supporting all students through ongoing mentorship, leadership development, and community engagement throughout the academic year. Congratulations to our new fellows, and heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this year’s successful fellowship process and open house. A special shoutout goes to our incredible student assistants, who played vital roles in managing fellowship interview logistics, observing interviews, providing valuable feedback, and helping extensively with open house preparations.
