In celebration of Open Education Week, March 2-6, 2026, Skyline College hosted several events highlighting the impact of open and affordable learning materials. The week featured workshops, panels, and student activities designed to raise awareness about Open Educational Resources (OER) and Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) initiatives.

Majdolene Dajani and Harry Tun of Skyline Library invited students to spin the wheel and win prizes while learning about ZTC courses and pathways at Skyline.

Skyline College faculty Ariel Katz, Ryan Lescure, David Hasson, Lisa Weiss, and Luciana Castro shared their insights at a panel discussion titled “Opening Doors: Skyline College Faculty Talk about Using Affordable Course Materials.” Instructional Designer Andrea Fuentes and Librarian Vincent Kang presented “Lighten Your Load: Using AI Tools to Enhance OER,” a practical workshop demonstrating how tools like AI can help instructors develop open course materials.

SMCCCD ZTC leads from each campus also hosted a keynote address by Tiffany Lanoix of the statewide Academic Senate’s OER initiative. Ms. Lanoix spoke on the topic of “Doing Dangerous Work: the ASCCC IDEA Framework.” Her remarks focused on how community colleges can continue their important work in Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Anti-racism amid political challenges.

A part of the global Open Education Week celebration, these events drew participants from across the United States and Europe. If you’d like to view recordings of these sessions and others presented by SMCCCD faculty, you can find them at the SMCCCD Open Education Week website.
