Over the past academic year, Career Services have been working to establish a footprint in Daly City, San Bruno, and Millbrae. Career Readiness Coordinator Ron Chand and more recently Employer Engagement Coordinator Vania Ruiz have taken steps to engage with our community and offer more opportunities in more locations.

Over the summer and continuing into the fall, Skyline Career Services is collaborating with San Mateo County Human Services Agency (HSA) in Daly City to offer one-on-one career services for community members. Chand and Ruiz started by tabling at HSA offering vital information about professional development, career development, and best practices in job search. This partnership then grew into one-on-one meetings where individuals would sit with either Chand or Ruiz to discuss their employment needs and how they can succeed in landing a job. Ruiz offered information in English and Spanish and liaised with actively hiring employers to join these sessions at HSA.
Chand and Ruiz continued their collaboration with the Millbrae Public Library to offer career services at the public library. Ruiz worked with actively-hiring employers and asked them to table alongside Skyline Career Services. This allowed for two good results: community members can access employment opportunities that may be obfuscated to them for a myriad of reasons, and if community members are interested in the offered positions, they can get resume support right there and then. They also had the options provided to attend Chand’s monthly workshop series on more career development topics such as Resume Building, Professional Communication, Professionalism, and Networking.

Chand, along with Bay Area Entrepreneur Center Director Leah McGlauchlin, also opened up the San Bruno Skyline College Offsite Center to offer a computer lab for community members to work on their resumes and cover letters and access printing facilities. Ruiz also connected with actively-hiring employers to be present in the Center. This is a great opportunity for community members and students to find opportunities they may not otherwise have been able to access.
Similar to the workshop series offered at the Millbrae Public Library, Chand is offering another workshop series at the Center. Each week community members will learn Resume Building, Professional Communication, Professionalism, and Networking. BAEC now also offers an “Acknowledgement of Completion” which community members can put on their resume as another feather in their cap to show future employers that they have completed this workshop series.
If community members need career services, there are now FOUR different locations: Daly City HSA, Millbrae Public Library, BAEC, and Skyline College. This initiative offers an equitable venue for all who may be in need of career services and continues Skyline College’s mission.
