The Respiratory Care (RC) program hosted the Greater Bay Area region’s CSRC Sputum Bowl earlier this month. This quiz-style competition between RC programs allows students to showcase their mastery of lung function, treatment methods, and best practices.

Congratulations to Tyler Gormly, Jessica Dos Santos Castilho Rodrigues, Joel Batitay, and Brandon Faulkner for winning the regional CSRC Sputum Bowl! The three teams – The Breath Savers, Thoracic Park, and Terminal Extubators – spent weeks enhancing their knowledge retention and critical thinking skills. Through this rigorous preparation, they developed strong teamwork and communication, which are transferable skills for success in the field of respiratory care.

While undoubtedly benefiting our current students, the Sputum Bowl also engages program alumni, community members, and current Respiratory Care Practitioners. Sara Morrison, an AS Respiratory Care alumni and current BS Respiratory Care student, has been actively involved in preparing current students, feeling “so proud of each and every student who participated in these games”. She recounts how “each of these students took time out of their already busy schedules to study, practice, and eventually play in these games. They all went out and put themselves into a stressful and anxiety-provoking situation and played to the best of their abilities. There was a lot of strong competition this year, but thankfully, one of our teams was able to be victorious and win the Regional Sputum Bowl. Now they are getting ready to head to the State Sputum Bowl, where I cannot wait to see what they achieve.”

The Skyline College Respiratory Care program is currently accepting applications for Fall 2025 entry! This 2 year AS degree program accepts 25 students each year. The program application is open from January 15 to May 1 and the program begins in the fall semester (mid-August). In the first year, students attend lectures, labs, and demonstrations, and participate in cohort-based learning. In the second year, the majority of time is spent in clinical rotations to prepare students for the profession.
