Psi Beta, a national honor society emphasizing Psychology, is proud to host Giving Away Psychology (GAP), a speakers series to share psychology-related information. This month, we focused on neuropsychology.

Our October GAP presentation was facilitated by New2Neuropsychology (N2N), an organization of professional and in-training neuropsychologists. N2N’s mission is to help build a more diverse next generation of neuropsychologists by demystifying the process of pursuing a career in this amazing field, in part by giving presentations to historically underrepresented students.

Dr. Jessica Alva and Dr. Zanjbeel Mahmood, along with Doctoral Students Michelle Gereau Mora and Numfon Vilay, provided an excellent introduction and overview of the field. This included:

  • What the field of neuropsychology is and what neuropsychologists do
  • How to and why become a neuropsychologist
  • Demonstrated some rapid-fire neuropsychological activities
  • Answered questions posed by attendees

Some presenters were community college alumni and shared their paths to graduate school. They also provided examples of things students can do to stand out on their college applications for four-year and graduate degrees. (Bonus: being in a club and/ or Honor Society were two of them!)

We thoroughly enjoyed this introduction to neuropsychology and are looking forward to exploring the additional resources N@N is sending to our Psi Beta chapter. If you’d like to learn more about N@N, please visit https://new2neuropsych.org/

Psi Beta meets every Thursday from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in Building 6, 6-203. Please join us!
