Psi Beta is a national honor society in psychology that is proud to host our Giving Away Psychology (GAP) series. In this series, various guest speakers discuss their expertise and experience in the field of psychology. In September, we focused on mental health awareness.

On September 26, 2024, Psi Beta collaborated with Active Minds to host a Flourish workshop in the Intercultural Center and Zoom. Flourish is a corporation founded by scientists from Stanford University and designers from Google whose mission is to promote a proactive approach and early intervention towards students’ mental health and personal growth across college campuses. Dr. Julie Cachia, co-founder of Flourish, and Sunday Holland, research & community coordinator of Flourish, introduced the statistics and science behind the Flourish app, including the following:
- The prevalence of stress (66%), loneliness (39%), and sadness (36%) of the student population everyday.
- The proactive approach, instead of the reactive approach, towards mental health and personal growth through prevention, education, and community reinforcement.
- The PERMA model for human flourishing – positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and achievement.
As well as the individual beneficial features of the Flourish app, including the following:
- Daily emotional wellness – see it, know it, and use it.
- Daily Flourish activities – three good things, gifting a compliment, nature walk, and more!
- Weekly summary and insights
- Monthly reflection and growth
- Flourish buddies
- Sunnie, an AI happiness coach and companion who is always there to inspire, support, and celebrate you!
The Flourish workshop was very informative, engaging, and meaningful for each and every one of us. We are sincerely grateful for Julie and Sunday for taking the time to introduce Flourish to us.
Psi Beta is an Honor Society for students interested in Psychology. Please stop by and join us for our weekly meetings, which are held every Thursday from 1:00-2:00 in 6203!
