Nearly 300 incoming students filled Skyline College on August 6, 2024, for a transformative day focused on college success. The event was months in the making and required both the spring and summer semesters to plan an outstanding event for incoming students.
Students who attended the Promise Scholars Summer Institute (PSSI) covered a variety of topics, from how to successfully prepare for college life to self-care and empowerment, and other topics essential to student success.
The day was packed with informative and engaging sessions. Counselors from the Promise Scholars Program, Extended Opportunity Programs and Services Program, and TRiO Program led presentations on achieving college success, building a strong community with the Skyline College campus, exploring potential career paths, and more. A guided campus tour allowed students to explore their new campus and look at the college’s facilities and resources.
To complement the presentations, a resource fair offered students the opportunity to connect with various on-campus support services. Representatives from Strategic Partnerships & Workforce Development (SPWD), the health center, the transfer center, the Undocumented Community Center, Sparkpoint, financial aid, the Peer Mentors, and more were on hand to answer questions, provide information, and offer guidance.
“I liked how the information provided was not too confusing, making it an informative event that wasn’t too overwhelming. Also, the staff were welcoming and kind. That made the event more enjoyable and overall a good experience.” said one of the incoming fall 2024 students who attended the event.
Another student said, “I feel more confident moving into the school year and I met a lot of new people.”
The event’s success can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of faculty, staff, and students who worked tirelessly to create a meaningful and impactful experience for the Fall 2024 cohort of students. The event would not have been possible without the Promise Scholars Program team, the Outreach team, the EOPS and TRiO teams, Annie Trinh, Bryant Evans, and his team, the Media Services team, Saul Milan, the Undocumented Community Center team, the Peer Mentors team, the Financial Aid team, the Student Workforce and Development team, the Sparkpoint team, the SkyGAP team, MCPR, and the Skyline College community.
