For the Spring 2024 Community Mural Project, student artists from Skyline College’s Painting I & II courses partnered with the City of South San Francisco to design and create a new piece of public art.

The students’ mural on Willow Avenue, near Nora Way, reflects the past, present, and future of the city. The piece, painted on a sidewalk retaining wall, also references the natural environment of the mural site, incorporating a tree-root motif and images of local animal species. Students Valerie Lin and Reese Lu produced a short film of their fellow students at work.

Each spring, a cross-listed section of Painting I & II is dedicated to the art of mural painting, under the direction of Professor Amir Esfahani. Community partners apply for the project and are selected by the Skyline College Art Program. Past projects have included park facilities, electrical boxes, and an elementary school.
