On November 18, 2024, the International Student Program (ISP) collaborated with the Study Abroad Team to kick off International Education Week (IEW) and hosted the IEW Opening Ceremony, some of the highlights included the Employee Appreciation Award; to honor a Skyline College employee who has made a significant difference to international students; the Study Abroad and Transfer Panel where students provided insights into their experiences studying abroad and the experience of transferring to a 4-year university; and the announcement of the winners of the Study Abroad Photo Contest.
William Ordoyo, an international student from the Philippines, was the emcee for the event. To kick it off, a captivating video highlighting the Ghana Summer 2024 Study Abroad program created by UMOJA was shown. Following the video, several college leaders delivered inspiring welcome remarks–Dr. Newin Orante, Acting President of Skyline College, Dr. Kristy Lisle, Interim Vice President of Instruction, and Zaid Ghori, Interim Dean of Global Learning Programs and Services (ISP), each spoke passionately about Skyline College’s dedication to cultivating a community of global learners. Their messages underscored the institution’s commitment to advancing international education and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

The event also featured a Transfer Panel Discussion, moderated by Clair Yeo-Sugajski, ISP Program Manager, with alumni, Mowen Tan and May Han Hnin. They shared how their transfer journeys shaped their education, careers, and personal growth.
- Mowen Tan (UC San Diego): Transferring to UCSD marked a pivotal step in Mowen’s academic career. Her leadership experiences at Skyline College helped build her confidence and prepared her for new challenges at a four-year university.
- May Han Hnin (UC Los Angeles): The transition from a community college to a four-year university broadened May Han’s academic perspective. She highlighted how the supportive environment at Skyline College laid a strong foundation for her success at UCLA.

Another highlight of the ceremony was the announcement of psychology Professor Jennifer Merrill as the Employee Appreciation Award winner. This special recognition is awarded annually to an employee who has significantly and positively impacted the lives of international students at Skyline College. Professor Merrill’s dedication, compassion, and support were celebrated with resounding applause, showcasing the strong bonds she has built with students. Her commitment to fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment has left an indelible mark on the international student community.
