On Saturday, September 21, members of the Honors Club, Phi Theta Kappa, and Psi Beta participated in the 40th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day. This is the country’s largest annual volunteer event with participants removing hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash from the state’s beaches, lakes, and waterways. As of September 22, 2024, with 60% of cleanup sites reporting, 28,751 volunteers united across the state to collect an impressive 254,772 pounds of waste. This total includes 242,312 pounds of trash and 12,461 pounds of recyclable materials — equivalent to 127 tons of litter removed from our environment.
The group volunteered at Linda Mar Beach and had the additional bonus of seeing Skyline College Professor of Biology, Dr. Shari Bookstaff, staffing the Pacific Beach Coalition booth with her students.
In addition to civic engagement, the group also had the opportunity to build community by having lunch together. It was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday!
