Gilbert Wong, a former Skyline College Automotive Technology student, has successfully opened his own smog station. The Smoggy Bottom, located on Bay Street in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf neighborhood, is now open for business.
Wong studied to become a smog technician under Ruben Parra, Professor and Program Coordinator of Skyline College’s Automotive Technology program. The program offers a Smog Check Inspector License Pathway, which provides students with a direct, fast-track route to becoming smog technicians and launching their careers in the automotive industry.
After opening his station, Wong shared a message of appreciation with Professor Parra:
“Just wanted to thank you for training us and getting us ready for becoming smog techs. Just had my station opened for business. [Here’s] a picture of me and my first customer. Station’s business name is called Smoggy Bottom.”

His message reflects the impact of Skyline College’s Automotive Technology program, and the success that students can achieve through hands-on training and industry-focused education.

Congratulations, Gilbert, on this exciting achievement!
