In celebration of Earth Week 2025, the Skyline College Earth Day Every Day team enjoyed sharing a series of events and activities from Monday, April 21, through Saturday, April 26! Our campus community had a great time interacting with engaging exhibits, fun projects & local resources to learn ways to go green in our daily lives.

We kicked off the party on Monday with a fun afternoon in the sun. Students and staff enjoyed some downtime and good weather with music, art, and the outdoors. The main affair was painting! Terracotta pots were available to paint, decorate, and fill with a plant baby to take home. For students passing by with less time to sit and paint, many joined in adding a painted sign to our e(art)h activism collection with a message. These signs were displayed and shared at Earth Fest on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s events went off-campus, as we supported our colleagues in championing sustainable fashion at the Cañada Eco Elegance student-led fashion show. This wonderful program included booths offering insights into environmental consciousness, sustainability, fast fashion, and mindful design practices.

Wednesday was the highlight of our week: our 3rd annual Earth Fest! While not quite as sunny as our Monday kickoff, the energy in the Quad was warm and bright.
Many SMCCD groups joined us to celebrate, including our student club S.A.G.E. with more painting and planting activities, SparkPoint providing resources, the Critical Global Citizenship Education Project outreaching to students, SMCCCD Zero Waste Ambassadors in the dining hall, and SMCCCD Sustainability running the Museum of Tomorrow and SIM Mateo County exhibits. SIM Mateo was displayed in the Fireside Dining Hall and featured student work on clean energy potential and sustainable development in our local area.
Local organizations in our community also visited and engaged with our students in various areas of sustainability. The Assistance League of San Mateo County facilitated our popular free Clothing Swap, where students, staff, and faculty could bring clothing to share or take a new piece off the swap rack. Recology talked with students about our local recycling programs and gave out fun items like coffee cups made from upcycled materials. Pacific Beach Coalition and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy provided information on our local outdoor wonders. They offered opportunities for hikes, beach clean-ups, and flora & fauna conservation activities in our community. We were joined by many other wonderful groups, such as Ropes for Rescues with their upcycled climbing rope leashes for a good cause, Sustainability Service Corps, providing local resources, and Commute.org, engaging our students in sustainable travel options in our area.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in making our 3rd annual Earth Fest a great success!
We finished off the week with a wonderful film and discussion opportunity in the Fireside Dining Hall. Our screening of Farming While Black, which focuses on the rising generation of Black farmers and the historical importance of African agrarianism and its role in environmentalism, featured the presence of film director, writer, and producer Mark Decena, who spoke in a panel discussion about the film and its topic.

The week wrapped up with Earth Day Every Day, and S.A.G.E. represented Skyline College at an Esplanade Beach cleanup and Linda Mar PelicanFest hosted by the Pacific Beach Coalition. S.A.G.E. and the Earth Day team enjoyed a wonderful event focused on ocean conservation and local environmentalism.

We appreciate the Earth Day Every Day President’s Innovation Fund for financially supporting all Skyline College campus events.
