For the past 3 years, I have had the opportunity to referee Special Olympics Basketball Championships. Each year this event is held at Amador High School in Pleasanton. This events gives individuals with mental, physical and intellectual disabilities the opportunity to display their athletic talents.
Intellectual disabilities happen in all cultures, races and countries. Through sports, these athletes are seeing themselves for their abilities, not disabilities. They become confident and empowered by their accomplishments.
As a volunteer we are given an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of these individuals.
