Please join the Skyline College Social Science/Creative Arts team as we extend our congratulations and best wishes to Dr. Johannes Masare on his retirement after 35 years of service to the Skyline College community.
Dr. Masare began his career teaching Political Science at Dar-es-Salaam University in Tanzania, Africa. He received his masters and PhD from UC Berkeley in 1970 and 1978 respectively and started teaching at Skyline College in 1985.
Professor Masare dedicates his career to his mother who was his first teacher and the greatest champion of his education, going to work herself to pay for his schooling. Passing on the chance to be a goat herder and a Catholic priest, Dr. Masare chose teaching as his life’s work. He approached his work with a unique understanding of how education can empower and transform and the important role of teachers in this process.
2020 marks Dr. Masare’s 80th birthday and 35th year as an esteemed member of the Skyline College faculty. When asked in a 2019 Skyline View article about his 50+ years of teaching he said, “That is my calling, my mission, my vocation”. We believe students, faculty and staff agree.
