On Friday, October 17, the Psi Beta/Psychology Club hosted a workshop on depression in college students. We are grateful to Juan Trujillo, a Peer Support Specialist from allcove, for sharing valuable insights about the symptoms of depression, common triggers, coping strategies, and where to find help.

Depression is common among college students and can be triggered by academic pressure, social isolation, financial stress, homesickness, and relationship challenges. These difficulties can feel overwhelming, often leading to fatigue, loss of motivation, and trouble completing daily tasks.

Thankfully, there are effective coping strategies. Reaching out for support, maintaining a routine, eating nutritious foods, exercising, and practicing mindfulness can all help. He also reminded us of professional resources, including Skyline College’s Personal Counseling, community resources like allcove, and calling or texting 988.

Juan emphasized that we can support others by listening without judgment, staying connected, and encouraging them to seek help when needed. The key takeaways: depression is common and treatable, seeking help is a sign of strength, and no one has to face it alone.
