From February 5th to 9th, 2024, the Skyline College Chemistry Club and ASSC (Associated Students of Skyline College) teamed up to create an exciting Chemistry Week. This turned our campus into a fun place to explore and discover chemistry. With daily events from 11 am to 1 pm, students were treated to a week filled with engaging activities, workshops, and mind-blowing demonstrations.
The week started with “Slime Monday,” attracting a crowd of eager students to the tabling area. Enthusiastic participants not only received cool swag by following the Chemistry Club’s Instagram and spinning the wheel but also enjoyed creating their slime concoctions. The interactive and hands-on nature of the event set the stage for an exciting week ahead.
On the second day, creativity took center stage with the “Chemistry Poster Decoration” event. Students immersed themselves in crafting their chemistry-related posters, showcasing their artistic flair while receiving an array of goodies, including pens, snacks, pins, stickers, and even chemistry week t-shirts. The event successfully combined education with artistic expression.
“Periodic Table Day” brought an element of competition to the week with a thrilling periodic table car racetrack game. Students could engage and deepen their understanding of elements from the periodic table.
The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the “Chemistry Magic Show.” Chemistry laboratory coordinator Mousa Ghanma supported and prepared the show and featured four esteemed professors: Alec (A.J.) Bates, James LeBlanc, Susanne Schubert, and Patrick McKay. The live performance in a chemistry lab and broadcasted on Skyline College’s Instagram showcased awe-inspiring experiments such as elephant toothpaste, clock reactions, fake blood from chemical reactions, and flame tests. The Fireside Dining Room in Building six also hosted a live audience where students marveled at the wonders of chemistry unfolding before their eyes.
The grand finale of Chemistry Week featured a collaborative workshop with biology and chemistry scholars. Students were treated to a crystal roses and bath bomb-making workshop at the STEM center in building 6, combining the beauty of chemistry with the allure of hands-on creation. This cross-disciplinary collaboration emphasized the interconnectedness of various scientific fields.
Chemistry Week at Skyline College was a resounding success, fostering a deeper appreciation for the wonders of chemistry and providing students with unique opportunities for hands-on learning and engagement. As the week concluded, the echoes of scientific excitement lingered, leaving an indelible mark on the Skyline College community.
