On October 2, Skyline College’s ECHO Club held an event called Canvas and Cake. It was a way for students to take a break during exam season. The picnic-style event took place on the grassy field behind Building 4. Students introduced themselves by saying their name, major, and what they wanted to do in the future. This helped everyone feel more comfortable and encouraged conversation between students.

After that, it was time for a feast! Students were able to try a variety of snacks, sweet and savory. As they munched on cake, cookies, cheese, ham, and fresh fruits, students took the time to get to know each other and think about what they were going to paint in the next activity. Some planned to paint together, while others asked for ideas on what they should paint. One student commented that they hadn’t painted in a long time, and received words of encouragement that they would have no problem picking it up again.

Once their tummies were filled, and as music played in the background, the second activity, painting on canvas, began. Some students began excitedly discussing what they planned to paint, and others thought pensively about what colors they wanted to use. Students let their creativity come out – painting images of nature, shapes, and things that showed their culture, all whilst laughing, talking, and making new friends. The students really seemed to enjoy the activity, with some commenting that they felt a sense of calm and happiness – exactly what you need during exam season! ECHO Club hopes to host more events like these to continue to foster a sense of belonging at Skyline College.
