On Tuesday, September 23, Project Change at Skyline College had the honor of hosting students from Gateway Community High School. This was not just another campus visit; it was a powerful, inclusive experience that opened doors of possibility for students who may have never imagined themselves on a college path.

Gateway, an alternative/community high school, brought students whose educational journeys are typically marked by adversity, resilience, and strength. For many of them, stepping foot on a college campus was a first, creating an experience filled with both curiosity and hope.
The day began with a campus tour led by a Skyline Outreach ambassador, who highlighted the college’s renowned Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. From automotive technology to digital media and beyond, students were able to envision how their interests and talents could translate into real-world skills and viable careers.

The success of the Project Change event was made possible by the collaboration of various support systems. A heartfelt thank you to the SESP division and support programs that not only shared their space but also their knowledge, providing essential information about eligibility requirements, services, and the transformative benefits of each program. Their presence reminded every student in attendance that college is not just for a select few but for anyone ready to dream big and work hard.
A special shout out goes to the TRIO personnel, whose vision and coordination brought this event to life in support of Project Change. Thanks to their efforts, Gateway students were able to engage in an environment that celebrated their potential and showed them that their futures are not limited, nor defined, by their past.
Perhaps the most moving part of the event occurred during the Project Change student panel, featuring three courageous and inspiring voices: David D., Danesha B., and Crisanto “Luis” E. These students shared honest stories about their own paths to college, the challenges they faced, the barriers they broke through, and the reasons they chose to persevere. Their words didn’t just inspire; they resonated deeply, offering a reflection for many in the room who saw pieces of their own lives in those stories.
By using their platform to “pay it forward,” the student panelists became mentors, selflessly answering questions, giving honest advice, and sharing love. They dropped gems of wisdom, encouragement, and lived truths that empowered future students to believe in what’s possible, no matter the starting point.
As a community, we were truly honored to host this event. It was more than a visit; it was a reminder of why inclusive, student-centered, transformative programs like Project Change matter. They change perceptions, build bridges, and create opportunities for students to reimagine their futures.
We look forward to deepening our partnership with Gateway Community High School and continuing to foster spaces where all students feel seen, supported, and inspired to pursue higher education.
Together, we rise and re-create the narrative.
