In collaboration with CIPHER and UMOJA-ASTEP, the Black and Brown Scholars welcomed TED Talks speaker and author Dwight Taylor, Sr. to lead an empowering event for the Black and Brown Scholars program, “Domin8 Your Day.” Taylor delivered a powerful and heartfelt message that deeply resonated with everyone in attendance. “One can’t dominate their day until they learn how to dominate the moment.”

Centering his talk around the Domin8 Principles, Taylor emphasized self-worth, purpose, and daily intentionality. Through personal stories of adversity, leadership, and fatherhood, he offered relatable insights that encouraged students to take ownership of their futures. “Practice doesn’t make perfect. It makes us better.”

“I’ve never felt more seen,” shared one student. “He reminded me that my story matters and that I can lead without losing who I am.”

The atmosphere in the room was electric. Students laughed, nodded, took notes, and even wiped away tears. Many shared how Taylor’s vulnerability gave them permission to reflect on their own struggles and strengths.

Following the event, students expressed interest in mentoring others, leading community projects, and becoming more actively involved in student clubs and groups. The event closed with a book signing with Dwight Taylor, Sr., where students were able to connect with him on a personal level.

Taylor’s visit was more than a motivational talk—it was a moment of transformation. It reaffirmed the power of culturally responsive engagement and reminded everyone of the greatness that lives within our students of color.
