Skyline College’s Allied Health programs took their show on the road, presenting to Peninsula High School’s vibrant Herman@s Connection to College dual enrollment class on Thursday, January 29th. Representatives from the Emergency Medical Care, Surgical Technology, Sterile Processing Technology, and Respiratory Care programs shared their expertise with the engaged students, offering a glimpse into the exciting world of healthcare careers.

The event kicked off with a presentation in which program directors and faculty shared insights into their respective fields. Ilyan Baalbaki, the EMT program director, drawing from his experience as an EMT and paramedic in San Mateo County, shared real-life scenarios with students, giving them a taste of the challenges and rewards of the first-responder pathway. His career insights likely resonated with students considering a future in healthcare.

Following the presentation, students rotated through interactive stations, participated in hands-on activities, and answered questions at each program’s table. Surgical Technology showcased an impressive array of surgical instruments while demonstrating the tedious process of closing surgical cuts. The EMT students demonstrated how they remove patients from vehicles while preventing spinal injury using the KED device. Meanwhile, the Respiratory Care program brought lungs to life with an engaging demonstration that contrasted the lungs of a healthy person with those of a chronic smoker.

With current healthcare students and faculty on hand to answer questions, Peninsula High School students explored the many ways they can make a difference in healthcare through a holistic and equitable way.
