The Strengthening Student Success Conference was held in Garden Grove at the Hyatt Regency Orange County. Yvonne Reid, CITD Director and Skyline College President Dr. Regina Stanback Stroud and Eloisa Briones, Vice President of Administrative Services attended and participated in plenary and break-out sessions where they led discussions about strategies for building institutional effectiveness, supporting student learning, and increasing equitable outcomes for students. The theme of “Shared Responsibility” gave participants insight as to how their work in community colleges has a greater influence in the State of California’s labor market and economic development. Speakers from across the California Community Colleges presented on topics such as designing effective pathways, collaboration with high school students, implementing institutional design, cultivating a growth mindset, the influence of web coding boot camps, and workshops for students with academic difficulty.
An engaging post-conference workshop, “Implementing Institution Redesign: Levers for Achieving Equity in Completion” was led by Skyline College Administrators, Dr. Angélica Garcia, Vice President of Student Services and Aaron McVean, Interim Vice President of Instruction along with their colleagues from Bakersfield College, Career Ladders Project, and Guttman Community college at CUNY. Angélica and Aaron shared the work being designed at Skyline College to increase community college completion and transfer rates.
Those attending the conference analyzed their own work in the California Community Colleges and left with an understanding of how their service work along with today’s critical issues shape student success.
