The Skyline College Express Shuttle is Back!

Sam, Shuttle B Driver

The Skyline College Express Shuttle is up and running — receiving and delivering passengers!

Please say hello to Sam, the driver operating the ‘B’ shuttle. We are lucky to have him, as he is also the trainer and is particularly conscientious in making sure that our prospective passengers at each stop recognize the shuttle. He is very attentive to possible unfamiliarity from our potential riders.

Sam has been wiping down seats after each loop to promote safety. Hand sanitizer is also available.

While the shuttle typically only runs while classes are in session, this semester, given the protracted shut down, we started a week early, to test things out and orient new drivers. Additional information regarding the shuttle and its schedule and route can be found on the Skyline College Shuttle website.

International Student Program Hosts Its Spring 2022 Open House

On January 10, 2022, the International Student Program (ISP) kicked off the Spring 2022 semester with its Open House for new international students! More than fifty new international students were invited to attend the Open House which provided them with an opportunity to meet with the ISP staff and see our beautiful campus in person. The event was held on a drop-in basis to ensure the safety of the students, and it included an hourly campus tour led by the ISP student ambassadors. Lasheana, a new international student from Indonesia, said that she “had a really good time”. Lasheana was a Global Online Learning (GOL) student for the last two semesters where she took online classes from Indonesia. She said this semester will be a different experience for her as she is finally on campus. Students were exchanging their contact information and some of them decided to get together for dinner afterward! Continuing students from last semester were also invited to the event as we were not able to offer an in-person welcome last fall. Lynn who joined Skyline College in Fall 2021 noted “This is an orientation for me. It’s nice!”

ISP is welcoming more than fifty new international students from fourteen countries this semester. ISP will continue to provide services and programs for international students as well as for the entire Skyline College community. If you are interested in learning more about future ISP programs and events, contact ISP office at skyinternational@smccd.edu

Spring 2022 Launches Virtual Parking Permits

Effective now, Cañada College, College of San Mateo, and Skyline College are introducing a virtual parking permit system for purchasing virtual parking permits on all San Mateo Community College District campuses.

What is a virtual parking permit? Essentially, your vehicle’s license plate will act as your virtual parking permit. Individuals will register their vehicle plate information into an online virtual parking permit system when purchasing their permit. The permit software then generates a virtual permit linked to that vehicle’s license plate number. Visit the Parking website and the FAQs page for more information, including how to purchase a permit.

Include Your Events on the College Calendar for Extra Publicity

Remember to include all your events, workshops, info sessions, and anything else of interest to students on our public College Calendar.

The calendar allows the campus community to easily list events for students and the public.

CALENDAR EVENTS PROMOTED ON SOCIAL MEDIA

We’ll be highlighting upcoming events for the week on our social media accounts, along with a link to the college event calendar. Make sure your events are listed for a bit of extra exposure.

HOW TO SUBMIT EVENTS

You can submit events via the online submission form, available on the front page of the calendar. Training is not required. If you have any questions, check out the FAQ to help navigate the process. For questions not addressed in the FAQ, please contact Becky Threewit.

Useful features of the new event submission process include:

  • The event submission form is easy to fill out (no longer buried in Ad Astra)
  • Submit once to set up a recurring event (i.e., every Tuesday and Thursday)
  • Robust details sections for your events
    • Provide a short overview for the main calendar, and include full details on your event page
  • Set your event location as online, in-person, or hybrid, and include direct links to online registration or meetings

Useful features of the calendar include:

  • Have a lot of events? Create a calendar specific to your group, and display all or some events on the Skyline College calendar. For an example, check out the Athletics Calendar
  • Curated calendar widgets can be placed on web pages: see the homepage for an example!
  • If you have your calendar already set up for the semester on another platform, we can display it in the Livewhale format and link it into the Skyline calendar
  • Filters and search terms help users easily find what they’re looking for on the calendar
  • Easily share your events with options to copy a link or share through Facebook, Twitter, or email

Provide your Feedback!

This is a new system, and as such, we’ll need to make improvements as we go along. We welcome your suggestions and feedback!
