Study Abroad to Launch Virtual Internships in Italy

In order to continue to offer our students rich global learning opportunities, SMCCCD Study Abroad, along with fellow Northern California Study Abroad Consortium (NCSAC) member Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC), in partnership with the American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS), is excited to launch Virtual Global Internships. Beginning Spring 2021, students may participate in virtual internships in Italy. This program will allow students to hone professional skills and acquire valuable work experience with a global team, learning cross-cultural communication skills, time management, digital literacy and adaptability.

Some sample internship opportunities include an animation studio, a web communications agency, a career consultant company, and more. To learn more, please visit the Spring 2021 Virtual Global Internship page. Priority applications close Thursday, October 22, 2020. Students may apply online.

Scholarships are available. Interested students may apply online or schedule a one-on-one advising sessions with the SMCCCD Study Abroad office at www.smccd.edu/goabroad to learn more.

Honors is for Everyone!

On Thursday, September 3, 2020, new Faculty Coordinator Assistant Professor Janice Sapigao welcomed students to the Fall 2020 Honors Transfer Program (HTP). Others welcoming honors students included:

• Dr. Melissa Moreno, Skyline College President
• Danni Redding Lapuz, Dean of Social Science/Creative Arts
• Ryan Luong, Honors Club President

Attendees heard their inspiring educational journeys and personal research experience.

Honors students recognized former Faculty Coordinator, Professor John Ulloa. Their video thank you highlighted Professor Ulloa’s years of work as the HTP Faculty Coordinator, the support he provided honors students, and his firm belief that “Honors is for Everyone”.

Student attendees were also introduced to HTP Counselors Joyce Lee & Suzanne Poma and Transfer Center Counselor Lucy Jovel, met Honors Transfer Club Officers, and learned about campus Honor Societies from Professor Linda Whitten.

As the new HTP Faculty Coordinator, Assistant Professor Janice Sapigao will be working with faculty and HTP counselors to successfully transfer and graduate as many Honors students as possible.

Important Upcoming HTP date:  Friday, October 2, 2020 last day to submit an Honors contract for Fall 2020 courses.

BAEC Student Spotlight: Rebecca Gines

Rebecca Gines is a student intern in the Internship Job Shadow Program of the Bay Area Entrepreneur Center Marketing Team.  In the short time since starting the internship program, she has contributed to the team by sharing her innovative ideas and supporting marketing efforts for our virtual events and resources.

Rebecca is majoring in kinesiology with the career goal of entering the healthcare industry with a focus on occupational therapy.  She has proudly worked for twenty years in the massage therapy field and brings that knowledge base with her.

Rebecca is quoted as saying, “I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Skyline College! Absorbing as much information with a variety of topics available has engaged and taught me so much intellectually as well as socially.”

Rebecca is just one example of how Skyline College truly shines!

Latinx Heritage Events at the BAEC

During the first weeks of October, the Bay Area Entrepreneur Center will be hosting several virtual events in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month and offering opportunities for students and community members to learn from business owners, entrepreneurs and educators and other professionals throughout the Latinx diaspora.  Events will include panels, one-on-one discussions with Q&A and other resources.
