Fall 2019 International Student Orientation

International Student OrientationSkyline College started the fall 2019 semester by welcoming over 80 new international students from 25 different countries. In an effort to ease the new students’ transition, the International Student Program (ISP) hosted a three-day orientation from August 6-8th where the attendees received valuable information on the following topics: F-1 visa regulations, employment, cultural adjustment, safety and security, immigration laws, health insurance coverage and academic expectations.

The orientation also included the following activities: a student ambassadors’ panel, campus tour, raffle, placement testing and class registration. The new students were successfully guided through the registration process by the student ambassadors and were prepared for their first day at Skyline College on August 14th.

For many students, it is their first time away from home, so orientation is an opportunity to become acquainted with their new environment and to make new friends. The International Student Orientation is an important event that helps facilitate international students’ success and it wouldn’t be possible without the student ambassadors who helped to prepare and support the ISP team during this event. ISP will continue to provide services and programs for international students as well as for the entire Skyline College community. The next ISP event will be the Welcome Bonfire on August 31, 2019 at Ocean Beach and everyone is invited to be a part of it!

SparkPoint Accepting Applications for Fall 2019 Grove Scholarships

Grove ScholarsSparkPoint at Skyline College is currently accepting scholarship applications for 25 Career and Technical Education (CTE) students for the Fall 2019 cohort. Grove Scholarship applications are available online at skylinecollege.edu/sparkpoint and are due by 3:00 p.m. on September 12th.

Eligible students will be selected for the program based on three short personal statements that describe who they are, why they have chosen their career path and why financial literacy is important to them. Academic standing and GPA are not a factor in selection, as long as the student meets the minimum requirements of a 2.0 GPA and a 75% completion rate. Once selected for the Grove Scholars Program, students will receive individualized financial coaching and career counseling, as well as a $2,000 scholarship for the semester.

Men’s Basketball Player Named Top Student-Athlete in Northern California

Jacob Salinero Skyline College sophomore Jacob Salinero was named Northern California’s top men’s basketball student-athlete by the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association. Jacob graduated Magna Cum Laude (3.96 GPA) with an AA-T degree in Kinesiology. Originally from Half Moon Bay High School, Jacob will continue his athletic and academic careers at Sonoma State University this fall.

Beta Theta Omicron Members Shine in the Community

Computer Literacy and Internet Competency for Seniors Beta Theta Omicron members had a busy summer volunteering in the community, initiating several service projects during the summer. Members continued their award-winning Computer Literacy and Internet Competency for Seniors (CLICS) program. During the summer, they held training sessions at Magnolia Senior Center to help senior citizens learn to use their smartphones and tablets. Our students were impressed with the seniors’ commitment to learning. One senior was impressed that a Skyline College student took two buses to lead CLICS on Saturdays.

Beta Theta Omicron also encouraged children to learn science at the South San Francisco Community Center with fun labs on making ice cream and slime. Chapter members also held a Genius Bar in Skyline College Library to assist students with computer applications.

Financial Aid Welcomes New Program Services Coordinator

Patricia FloresThe Skyline College Financial Aid Department is proud to welcome Patricia Flores as the new Program Services Coordinator. In this new position, she will help promote financial aid and scholarships through in reach and outreach efforts, work one-on-one with high need students and collaborate with additional campus programs, learning communities and services.

Patricia has worked for several California Community Colleges for over five years. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from San Francisco State University and Masters Degree in Finance from Notre Dame de Namur University. As a first generation student, she began her journey as a Federal Work Study student and became a staff member at the College of San Mateo. From there she began to work in various departments in Enrollment Services such as Counseling, Transfer, Career Services, DSPS, and Assessment Center, which led to her passion to help other students with achieving their educational goals through various services and resources the campus had to offer. Upon graduating, Patricia worked at DeAnza College Counseling Department, where she continued to work with students and community members. She understood the importance of how critical it was for new and returning students to be informed and utilize all available resources. Whether it was to apply to college, financial aid, tutoring and scheduling a counseling appointment, they are all part of student success.

Prior to joining Skyline College, Patricia worked as a technical recruiter which heavily involved community outreach through event planning, presentations, hosting skill building workshops and establishing partnerships with local community colleges to help students find outstanding employment opportunities.

In spring 2017, Patricia joined the Skyline College Financial Aid Department as a Financial Aid Assistant where she continued to help students apply for financial aid and scholarships, understand their financial aid status, and connect with other Skyline College programs services. Patricia was given the opportunity to take on the responsibilities as a temporary Financial Aid Technician. She rapidly learned how to process and award Federal/State Aid.

Patricia is extremely excited in her new role as a Program Service Coordinator and looks forward to working with Skyline College’s students, staff, faculty and community members. For any financial aid questions and presentation requests, contact Patricia Flores at floresp@smccd.edu.

Strategic Partnership and Workforce Development Welcomes First Year Promise Scholars

Strategic Partnership and Workforce Development Welcomes First Year Promise ScholarsOn Wednesday, August 7, 2019, Dean Andrea Vizenor and the Strategic Partnership and Workforce Development team warmly welcomed over 200 first year Promise Scholars. The day was filled with interactive sessions, raffles and even a jumbo-sized word search, all aimed at introducing students to many of the services the new department has to offer.

To help students get ready for the workforce, Laura DeKelaita and Steven Lopez signed students up on the spot for LinkedIn Learning. Strategic Partnership and Workforce Development was able to provide subscriptions to the scholars for the online platform which provides over 5000 expert-led courses to discover and develop business, technology and creative skills.

In addition to LinkedIn Learning sign-ups, students participated in other dynamic activities. Jose Milan led the Resume Puzzle session that challenged students with a puzzle designed to introduce the essential parts of a resume and discover how to tailor one to a specific job.

Finally, Elsa Jimenez-Samayoa assisted with Interview Jenga where students practiced answering common interview questions with their peers, all while playing a game of Gigantic Jenga. The Jenga teams with the highest towers were awarded prizes.

The high energy event was organized by Program Services Coordinators, Steven Lopez, Laura DeKelaita and Michele Haggar, and was supported by previous Promise Scholars volunteers.
