TRiO SSS Fights Back!

SF49ersAs the result of the Congress sequestration the Skyline College’s TRiO SSS project budget was reduced by 5.23% or $26,000. This has impact the project’s ability to provide activities and events intended to expand our 330 first generation, low income students worldview. Many of our students have never had the opportunity to visit a museum, visit a college campus, see a play, or attend a student conference—this is what Congress eliminated by its inaction!

The TRiO SSS project has taken a proactive response to fundraise $1500. TRiO SSS students, faculty and staff have assembled an amazing group of gifts for a drawing. The gifts include the following:

• 2 tickets to the December 1, 2013 San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams a $200 value!

ASUS Memo Pad donated by the Skyline Bookstore

• 2 $25 gift certificates to JoAnn Café in SSF

Family Night-Out Special for Six at the Sea Bowl in Pacifica includes two hours of bowling, rental shoes, pizza and soda

• 1 VIP Skyline College Parking permit for any lot Spring 2014 semester

• 2 Guest passes to the Roccapulco Salsa Club in SF

• Skyline College Cosmetology Spa Pack gift certificate

• Skyline College Cosmetology Day of Beauty gift certificate

• $25 gift certificate to Estrada’s Fine Mexican and Caribbean Cuisine in Daly City

Your DONATION of $10 – $20 will support campus visits, cultural activities, and other special events. Tickets are available in Building 5 ASK FOR JUDY. The drawing will be November 22, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. in the Learning Center. You do not need to be present at the drawing to receive a prize.

Transfer Initiative Advisory Committee works to set priorities for Skyline College’s Transfer Initiative

A Transfer Initiative Advisory Committee has been set up with the goal of bringing faculty and staff together to explore how we can achieve the goal of increasing Skyline College transfer rates to four year universities. Specifically, this committee will focus on how we can impact Skyline College’s Transfer Culture.

The first meeting was held on September 17, 2013 and 20 faculty and staff attended. Participants took time defining transfer culture and broke into groups to answer the question: “What would Skyline College look like with a thriving Transfer Culture?”

initiativetransferAt the second meeting on October 29, 2013, participants worked in groups to prioritize the ideas as high, medium, and low priority to help focus and guide the work of the committee in the coming months. It was an engaging discussion that generated many new ideas! Among some of these ideas suggestions were to make changes in the areas of outreach, cross-divisional collaboration, and overall system changes. Final priorities will be set at the final meeting this semester on November 19, 2013 from 2:00-3:30 p.m. If you are interested in joining the Transfer Initiative Advisory Committee and being a part of changing how we see Transfer at Skyline College, please contact Suzanne Poma at pomas@smccd.edu or RSVP with Michele Haggar, at haggarm@smccd.edu.

Día de los Muertos Exhibit at the Art Gallery

Be sure to come see our current exhibit – Día de los Muertos, featuring works by Skyline College students, staff and faculty. Notable contributions to the show are altars made by the L.A.S.O. and Anthropology clubs, and several large collaborative projects made by art classes at our school. The exhibition will be on view in the gallery until November 16.

We had a vibrant reception for the show on Monday, November 4, with music performed by Zach Bruno and the Skyline College Jazz Quintet. We also enjoyed a lively fan dance performance by Skyline College student Courtney Tovar.

Institutional Planning Committee Update

Skyline College’s Institutional Planning Committee (IPC) held its third meeting of the year on Wednesday, November 13, 2013. Much of this meeting was dedicated to the initial discussion of possible revisions to the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). Many of the BSC measures were discussed in terms of how they are assessed, the goal value associated with the measure, and how we might improve the specific measure. As this was the first step in the process, more discussions will take place in the coming months culminating in a possible revised version of the BSC. In addition to this, the IPC engaged in a discussion on the Distance Education Strategic Plan and voted to recommend the plan to College Governance Council. Also, the IPC discussed a merger with the College Budget Committee to increase the degree to which our planning and budgeting are already integrated. As always, feedback on these or any topics are more than welcome so please feel free to speak with your IPC representative to make sure they have your input!

Life After Transfer: Honors Program Alums Share Their Knowledge

4014

Skyline College pride was busting out on Thursday November 7th when the Honors Program held an Alumni panel presentation specifically designed to inform and inspire current Skyline College students. Six Skyline College Honors Alums sat on the panel, generously sharing useful information and strategies for success based on their own experiences as transfer students.

The six panelists have all graduated from four year universities and are pursuing their dreams: Frances Bright graduated from UCB with a BA in Anthropology and MA in Folklore and Archeology; Derrick Hau from UCB in Molecular & Cell Biology; Raydan al Hubashi from UCSC in Politics; Jonathan Madison from Howard University in Political Science; Melba Madrigal from Cornell in Labor and Industrial Relations; and Leo Szeto from UCLA in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Frances is currently teaching a special course for transfer students at Berkeley. Derrick is working for a software company and enrolled in a MA program in biotechnology. Raydan is on his way to teach in China. Jonathan worked for three years in Congress and is currently enrolled in law school. Melba is working in finances for a software firm and developing a website for community college transfer students. Leo is working for Disney as an Imagineer and he will be moving to China to design rollercoasters for the upcoming Shanghai Disneyland.4009

The Skyline College students in the audience received the Alumni panelists’ remarks with great enthusiasm. The evening was full of interaction, connection and useful information. A mentor contact list was created on the spot, and one of the panelists, Derrick Hau, started a Facebook group for alums and current honors students.

The panel presentation was video taped by Ira Lau of Skyline College’s Media Center and will be available on the HTP web access site as well as through the HTP website, so students who could not attend on 11/7 can benefit from the presentation. Life After Transfer was designed by a focus group of current honors students and organized by Katharine Harer, former HTP Coordinator, and Priscilla Schwartz, Skyline Honors Alum Extraordinaire.
