Cal Grant 101 Workshop

Students at Cal Grant Workshop

Students at Cal Grant Workshop

On August 29, 2013 the Financial Aid Office conducted its first ever Cal Grant 101 Workshop.  The workshop was facilitated by Financial Aid Technician, Jenny Yang. Jenny is the newest member of the Financial Aid Office and she brings with her a wealth of knowledge and expertise regarding the Cal Grant Program. Thirty three students attended the workshop and received valuable information. Funded by the State of California and administered by the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC), Cal Grants are one of the smartest ways for students to get free money to help pay for their college education. Cal Grants help make college more affordable. Students who attended the workshop received important information about the application process and deadline dates. They also received hands-on assistance with creating a “WebGRANTS for Students” account. WebGRANTS is where students can monitor the status of their Cal Grant Award.

New Art Exhibition Opens Next Week at the Art Gallery

Art Exhibit Graphic

Come see an assortment of eccentric figure sculptures fashioned by Pacifica-based Artist Jerry Ross Barrish. Made from recycled material that Barrish scavenges at the beach and other locations, the sculptures all are constructed and then used in narratives that the artist writes and explores in his videos. Don’t miss this exhibition!

September 9 through October 26 at the Skyline College Art Gallery. Check out our website for gallery hours and more information.

The TRiO SSS Project Surf & Turf Expedition

In June, 36 TRiO SSS students took the opportunity to see Bodega Bay—surf and then hike through a giant sequoia redwood forest—turf. Biology Professor Carina Anttila-Suarez led the students on an all-day educational expedition to learn about conservation of marine species and environmental sustainability of ancient redwood forests.

Bodega Marine Laboratory

Bodega Marine Laboratory

The first stop was the Bodega Marine Laboratory which is a recognized international leader in solving complex environmental problems impacting coastal ecosystems. It is a “living laboratory” where scientists study natural areas that are not impacted by humans. The day started with an introduction and overview of the mission of the laboratory followed by a tour of research laboratories that had ongoing experiments with organisms such as abalone, sea urchins, crustaceans and fish. Afterwards the students took a nature walk led by Professor Anttila-Suarez to explore the coastal prairie and intertidal ecosystems.

Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve

Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve

The second learning experience was a visit to the Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve where the oldest tree is estimated to be over 1,400 years old and the tallest tree is 1300 feet. Students learned about the importance of ecosystem resources provided by the ancient redwood forest. After a nature walk through the redwoods, students enjoyed a sustainable lunch served by Vice President of Instruction Sarah Perkins, TRiO SSS Director Raymond Jones, TRiO SSS Counselor Jessica Lopez, TRiO SSS Coordinator Arielle Smith and Professor Gregg Grist. After lunch the Skyline College Climate Corps Sustainability Coordinator, Sabrina Lawrence-Gomez explained the importance of sustainability in the global food chain. An interactive learning experience focused on best practices that students can use to reduce the carbon footprint from foods they consume in their everyday lives.

This event is part of Skyline College’s commitment to engaging students in sustainability and supporting education for a diverse community of learners.

Skyline College ISLO Graphic Designed by Trojan Livius Darmawan

Institutional Student Learning Outcomes Graphic

Institutional SLOs (ISLOs) Graphic Designed by Livius Darmawan: Critical Thinking (yellow), Effective Communication (red), Information Literacy (purple), Citizenship (blue), and Lifelong Wellness (green)

Skyline College student Livius Darmawan designed the Institutional Student Learning Outcomes graphic to raise campus awareness. He worked on many projects prior to this one. For Westmoor High School, he designed graphics for more than fifteen school clubs’ shirts and sweatshirts, as well as the school letterhead. Once he enrolled at Skyline, he was very excited and happy when the Associated Students of Skyline College chose his logo for its purposes. Livius is still honing his art skills, and in the future, he wrote that he “hopes to find more opportunities to design and collaborate with awesome people.

For this ISLO graphic, his creative process revolved around one image that defined the ISLOs. To reinforce each of the five ISLOs’ unique characteristics, he separated each point with its own image and color; this way the message is clear that there are five important concepts to the ISLOs. To unite these five images, he created a shape that conveys that they are equally important. As such, each of the five images is a piece of pie, and all together they are the foundation of students’ education at Skyline as they pursue their AA/AS degrees.

You are warmly welcomed to participate in the Critical Thinking ISLO Town Hall on Monday, September 23, 2-4, in Room 6203. At this town hall meeting, we’ll analyze the data from assessing Critical Thinking, and reflect on feedback about the assessment process and rubric.

TRiO Explores Sustainability and the Environment

On June 28th 2013, Professor Carina Anttila-Suarez led 36 students from TRiO on an all-day educational expedition to open spaces in western Sonoma County to learn about conservation of species and environmental sustainability. Students visited the Bodega Marine Laboratory and Preserve to learn about the impact of Marine Protected Areas on threats to ocean organisms. The day started with an introduction from TRiO alumni and an overview of the mission of the laboratory. Alumni shared their undergraduate experiences and current graduate research, and encouraged students to follow their passions though higher education.
